70 /100 Just Reproach (Bar) 14 KING STREET Close to the seafront on a road leading to/from it just north of the pier, this is a lovely little square room micropub on a corner with a corner entrance. There's a nice older feel to the room, sympathetic to previous commercial incarnations. Cask, cans and real ciders are available, some local, some a bit further afield but all crafted. |
56 /100 Port Arms (Bar) 10 BEACH STREET Seafront pub in a cluster of food and drink establishments immediately south of the pier. Nautical themed in a traditional pub setting with wooden furnishings. It's a nice place to frequent with a big sea view patio area. It only had to often seen real ales on my visit. |
64 /100 Ship Inn (Bar) 141 MIDDLE STREET A little way up middle street just north of the centre, this is a lovely traditional urban pub with large floorboards and a carpeted area to the right of the central door, all looking a tad worn but not rundown. It's a good traditional look. The bar immediately left mostly carried Gadds brews on my visit. A lower-level garden with some covering is at the rear. |
70 /100 Smugglers Records (Beer Store) 9 KING STREET Opposite the Just Reproach, this corner bar and record store has a couple of gravity poured cask in a fridge, keg poured and a selection of craft cans. Its tables are limited given the space shared with the classic records that are available to buy. Appears like a bohemian style bar, perhaps by accident. |
76 /100 Port Arms (Bar) 10 BEACH STREET lovely located pub with sea view. nice local beers. |
74 /100 Just Reproach (Bar) 14 KING STREET Visited around lunchtime on Saturday June 2nd 2018.
Classic single room micropub with 4 beers and 4 ciders from gravity in a small chiller room out back.
Packed with locals we eventually squeezed onto the end of a table where we were made to feel welcome.
The room has half a dozen or so tables dotted about with a mix of stools, benches and old kegs with cushions on them.
Lots of old bric-a-brac adorn the walls and the posters in the toilets with celebrities advertising the Just Reproach are worth a gander !
Service, along with the patrons, was very friendly and the beers and cider we had we were all in great nick and at a good price (£3.40 a pint for most of the beers). Beers on this visit were from Kent, Canterbury, Box Steam and Oakham.
Overall a solid little micropub doing a great trade.
Check out Smugglers Records opposite. |
76 /100 Smugglers Records (Beer Store) 9 KING STREET Visited in the early afternoon of Saturday 2nd June 2018, located bang opposite The Just Reproach micropub.
Quirky dark old skool record store full of 7 inches and boxes to dive into.
They also have their own record label and run an annual festival.
2 keg taps both dispensing Time and Tide beers on my visit allied to a well stocked fridge of 60 plus cans and bottles including 4 or 5 Cloudwater offerings, Beavertown, Arbor, lots from Time and Tide (maybe 15 plus including their own house beer ... a gose at £1 a can!) and many more solid picks from the UK and Europe. Prices listed are drink in, 10% discount applied to take away.
The place was doing a good trade on our visit, there's a couple of benches in the middle but most folks were standing around drinking. They also did a few wines to drink in and take away.
Service was super friendly.
A really solid stop for some good beers to go and if old skool record shops are your thing this a go to venue ! |
70 /100 Smugglers Records (Beer Store) 9 KING STREET A great little place that as Ian mentions is diagonally opposite another great place namely the Just Reproach. Myself and Loz left Ian at the Reproach for five minutes as we went and browsed vinyl and beer. We have always argued that records and beer in a shop (better still a bar/shop) are a wonderful combo’ and have long harboured ambitions to open such a place in our parallel life. The records offered a great cross section of genres, old and new and were well laid out. The beers which were to be found on the RH wall as soon as you entered did not provide a particularly large range but what there was, was well chosen with a nice balance of local producers and then some harder to get stuff, I picked up a couple of bottles and also thought that the pricing was very fair. Now if they got a small small chiller beer dispensing unit and a keykeg, and pulled up a leaner and or a stool or two, this would be even better but hey-ho it’s still a nice little find, centrally located in Deal. |
82 /100 Just Reproach (Bar) 14 KING STREET Saturday 12th March 2016 and what a lovely day, in fact a lovely day to be beside the seaside. Although a tad cool, It was very sunny albeit a little hazy. We sat on the beach and had fish and chips. Anyway enough deviation, let’s get back to the pub. The Just Reproach is one of the new breed of Micro Bars that Kent seems to have been particularly pioneering in terms of the rolling out of and leading the way forward, there is a profusion of them in this county, they are cropping up all over the place I understand. This place follows the format of the Micro Bar to the book, i.e. one small room, (square in this place) no piped music, no bar, no flashing electronic machines, table service and a very simple premise to serve good beer and to encourage conversation with your fellow pub (Micro Bar) patrons. A little warning for those visiting, mobile phones must be switched off, or else you pay a £1 fine if they go off like I had to, admittedly it goes to a local hospice so it is something I didn’t begrudge but just be aware or else the whole place will chuckle at your misfortune. This bar used to be a confectionery shop according to Ian (Harrisoni) who we met here for our mini pub crawl of Deal and Walmer. It is situated reasonably central in town and also quite close to the seafront. It is on a corner and looks across diagonally opposite to another impressive new venture that sells vinyl (records) and bottled beer to take out, a good well chose range as well. I liked the Just Reproach, the banter was lively and fun, the beers (four cask) were very well kept, they are housed in a small same level cold room that you can view to the rear of this room. There was also a small selection of ciders on offer, mostly Kent based producers. The beers came from Salopian, By the Horns, Portobello and one other that I forget, it is all gravity dispense from the backroom to your table. I would imagine but I am not 100% sure that it is cash only as well here. We were here for about an hour it was quite’ish’ on arrival but rammed and standing room only when we left. A very nice place. |
54 /100 Smugglers Records (Beer Store) 9 KING STREET Record shop that also sells craft beer in bottle and can. Looks like a selection from The Bottle Shop in Canterbury. Friendly staff, good vibe with the music. Interesting, not run of the mill beer selection with a few hidden gems. Worth going to as it is diagonally opposite The Just Reproach micropub. |
74 /100 Ship Inn (Bar) 141 MIDDLE STREET Reasonable selection of lower abv’s beers and ales, and happy hour is always a bonus - friendly staff and good atmosphere are always guaranteed. |
68 /100 Just Reproach (Bar) 14 KING STREET Always have 4-5 local beers, with varying abv’s - so generally something for everyone. Will always make a point of coming here when I come to Deal. |
74 /100 Just Reproach (Bar) 14 KING STREET Nice little place in the centre of Deal - sort of comfy sittingroom feeling. No music - love it. English real ales on tap from the region. Also some ciders. Nice service, worth a visit. |
52 /100 Port Arms (Bar) 10 BEACH STREET Have been there after a long visiting tour through the city of Deal. Beautiful located just along teh sea we took a seat outside on the patio. The Ales were really nice, you may find some small local ones. Unfortunately there was a bad smell of antiseptic cleaner all over the place when we came in for ordering our drinks what I didn’t like that much. |
66 /100 Ship Inn (Bar) 141 MIDDLE STREET A little hidden away, but a real gem. Popped in for a quick one and ended up staying for a couple. Well kept beer, and a lovely atmosphere. Well kept pub with lots of interesting décor and a nice beer garden tucked out the back. Felt really comfortable and welcome here and would definitely come back. |
