74 /100 Stillwell Beer Bar (Bar) 1672 BARRINGTON STREET Undoubtedly the best craft beer bar in the city. Located in downtown Halifax, so it's at most 30 min walk to the other taprooms on the peninsula. Usually populated by beer from the Atlantic provinces (including their house beers), often some Quebec representation, and if you're lucky some Belgian offerings. 5oz pours available of everything. Staff tends to actually care a bit about the beer. Plus bottles/cans to go. Omitting this place from a beer trip is a poor decision. |
60 /100 5686 SPRING GARDEN RD Brewpub on Spring Garden Rd, owned by the folks running Nine Locks Brewing. Vibe is pretty standard for a brewpub/sports bar. 10 house beers on tap plus 5 guest taps (all NS brews) and 4 ciders. Nothing too exciting, but decent spread of styles; quality is okay. Flights of 4 available. |
58 /100 2606 AGRICOLA STREET Fairly large taproom within a few minutes walk from other taprooms. 8 ciders on tap + 4 local (NS) beers, all available in flights of 4 for $10. They also have a cellar list including several of their ciders not on tap as well as options from USA, UK, and Spain. House cider is pretty mediocre, mostly erring on the sweet side. A couple well-done, but not exceptional. If you want a cider stop in Halifax, this is probably the better option. |
54 /100 1932 BRUNSWICK STREET Taproom & brewery downtown. About 12 house brews on tap; mostly mediocre lagers, kettle sours, or hazies. Flights of 4 available for $12 after tax. The fridge has some of their interesting beers. Swing by and check out the fridge, taps are underwhelming. I can't understand why people rave about this place. |
68 /100 2534 AGRICOLA ST Taproom with a fair amount of space. 17 taps, 6 of which were cases. This time around it was mostly house taps and locally available stuff; a couple Burdock taps. They have had better selection on previous visits. Might as well swing by to see what they have, but the original location is superior for beer tasting. |
56 /100 2736, ROBIE STREET Decently-sized taproom with a patio in the summer and fall. About 12 taps plus 4 can pours; flights of 4 available for $14 after tax, flights of 6 for (I think) $18 after tax. Beer quality is pretty middling. This is a low-priority stop. |
56 /100 2223 NORTH PARK ST Patio-only taproom next to the Commons, close to a couple other taprooms; noise from North Park can be disruptive, but it's not too bad. 11 house taps, 4 house can pours, and couple guest ciders. Minimum 10oz pours, tasters OK. Beer is very middling quality. Better off going to their Robie St taproom and getting a flight. |
52 /100 2220 GOTTINGEN ST Medium-sized taproom close to other taprooms. Has 6 house taps plus a couple ciders; minimum 10oz pours, unfortunately. Options are lame lagers, a kettle sour, and a couple hazies. I want to like Tusket as a brewery, but lately I've been pretty disappointed in their offerings. Probably worth checking out their taps before going; no online taplist or bike rack, but the windows are well-placed. The woman working there was nice enough, but assured me that all their beers were made with fresh hops, which either relfect very well on the brewery or poorly on the staff. Similar to Boxing Rock: might as well if you're in the area, but Boxing Rock is better. |
60 /100 2710 AGRICOLA ST Taproom close to several other breweries. 20 taps, including some non-beer options. The beer quality is okay; an emphasis on hop-forward beers. Flight of 4x4oz for $10. Bar service. Not a high-priority stop, but if you're in the area, might as well. |
62 /100 2790 WINDSOR ST Odd little place inside the Local Source Market. Has a fridge with a decent selection of their cans and bottles; 5 taps and they only serve pints for $8. Their DIPA seems to be consistently on tap and is worth trying. I tend to be pretty happy with the beer quality here, relative to Halifax. The woman who's usually there is quite friendly and seems to know the beer. Hard to justify the stop if you're trying to rate a lot of beer in a short period of time though. The low rating is really only reflective of them exclusively serving pints, which will hopefully change. |
68 /100 6041 NORTH STREET Small taproom with patio, not too far from a few other breweries; cool vibe. 8 house brews on tap; tending towards stronger styles: 2DIPAs, an IS, an imperial pilsner. Quality is mixed; their hazies are egregious, but others are well-done, especially their IS. Assume any IPA not labelled as "west coast" is hazy. Bottle shop is next door. Worth a stop since the taplist is usually a nice deviation from the standard set of styles, but the taplist is small and variable in quality. |
48 /100 1518 DRESDEN ROW Fairly small taproom just off Spring Garden, a short hop from Nine Locks and Stillwell Beer Garden. 9 house ciders on tap, plus around 4 local beers. Custom flights for about $11. Pretty much every cider I had here was way too sweet, jammed full of sugars. One more pour and I would have walked away with diabetes. I can't recommend this as a stop, unless you really like sweet ciders. |
58 /100 6273 QUINPOOL RD Brewpub on Quinpool a couple minutes from the Propeller taproom. Brews under the name "Revelry". Has 18 house taps plus Island Folk ciders. The house beers are all available on a flight of 4 for $11. Quality is pretty low, I had 2 flights and a couple were enjoyable, the rest needed work. They're fairly new so I still have hope they'll improve in the future.
Also, they do get loud in the evening, as they have live music and dance nights throughout the week. |
66 /100 6128 QUINPOOL RD Smallish taproom on Quinpool, a couple minutes from Revelry. Has 14 house taps, 2 can pours, plus some other stuff (exact number change throughout the year). They usually have their standbys which are fairly middling quality, plus a few rotating/seasonal taps. Their imperial stouts are worth checking out. The online taplist does not appear to be updated regularly. Flights of 4x5oz for $10 after tax. Worth a stop. |
58 /100 The Oxford Taproom (Bar) 6414 QUINPOOL RD Taproom with a nice patio out back, about 5 min walk from Propeller and Revelry. 16 taps including a cider. Flights of 5x4oz available for $13. Quality is mixed, but tends to be low. Had a couple nice lager styles, offset by an infected DIPA. No taplist online. Might as well stop here if you're already on Quinpool, but a low-priority Halifax stop. |
74 /100 1149 MARGINAL ROAD Our last stop in Halifax before getting back on the ship. Low expectations since the location was on the dock, reel in the tourists I thought. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and they recommended a hazy DIPA that I was served in a 16 oz snifter, the heaviest beer on tap they had. It was quite good. My wife and I sat outside in the patio, took in the scene and enjoyed ourselves. They also have a retail store under the same roof. I found a 650 ml bottle of barley wine there to bring home for later. |
74 /100 1222 BARRINGTON STREET We visited Henry House today with Brit friends who did not know how enjoyable a pub crawl in Canada can be, interesting. A historical building, a nice beer bar inside and attentive service. I sampled four different local or semi-local beers, three tolerable, one not at all. Fine atmosphere here, the beer list could stand an upgrade. |
60 /100 2220 GOTTINGEN ST 12 taps total (8 beer, 2 cider, 1 kombucha, 1 empty). No flights or half pours. Beer is decent. Run down area. |
56 /100 2736, ROBIE STREET 10 taps, 1 cider. Flights available, but they didn't change it up enough since the last time I was here 2 years ago so couldn't make more than 2 beers for a flight...
Has a reputation - open later, creative lower quality beers, my first visit I ended up joining a server here to a weird 3am Halifax bar and ended up at a crypto bro house party (details censored). As a beer rater, not great, but if you want a fucking crazy experience and are willing to talk up the staff, you'll have a real Halifax party experience... |
56 /100 2 Crows Oxford / Yeah Yeah’s Pizza (Restaurant) 2983 OXFORD ST 11 taps and a kombucha tap. Has a Sing Sing (Vancouver bar) vibe. Pizza is fine, but not it’s not Luppolo (Vancouver brewery). Prefer the other 2 Crows location, but it’s close to some other breweries if you’re in the area anyway. Small to go fridge. |
54 /100 RockHead Wine and Beer Market (Beer Store) 2651 WINDSOR ST HALIFAX Didn’t see any taps in there. Decent selection of Nova Scotia beers, but mostly just the core lineup of many breweries, no limited release stuff. Small fridge section with most beers at room temperature. It’s between Unfiltered and Boxing Rock so easy stop between breweries. |
52 /100 2790 WINDSOR ST 5 taps, but only 16oz pours. Was hoping to get some barley wines to go, but they only have the recent stuff in the to go fridge. Location looks to be an old gas station or auto mechanic garage. Seems quite new so perhaps they’ll eventually offer smaller pours and have their barley wines to go in the future. Walkable to other breweries in the area so can do a quick stop in, but wouldn’t stay long. Rating is harsh, but I can’t really raise the points based on the categories (specifically selection). |
66 /100 1222 BARRINGTON STREET Visited on a spring afternoon. The burger was average at best, and there are only few changing taps for those wanting to visit often. Service however good and I like the old building. |
86 /100 Stillwell Beer Bar (Bar) 1672 BARRINGTON STREET Visited multiple times. 12 taps, 1-3 casks, bottles, wines and cider. Really good burger and fries, haven't tested more in the menu. Best taproom I have tried in the city. |
72 /100 1615 GRAFTON ST Located at 5239 Sackville Street, Halifax, this is a big commercial venue with hosted booth, table and bar seating. Service suits the style of the venue. On the day of my visit there were 15 craft beer taps (plus a hard Root Beer tap) - 11 core and four seasonal. Available are four "Flight Tours" offering set selections of four their range of beers in each "Tour" for about $13. Flights customised to your own taste are also available. A limited range of take-away cans can be purchased. A good venue to get a number of single-brewery PEI brews. |
72 /100 Stillwell Beer Bar (Bar) 1672 BARRINGTON STREET Nice modern bar with 4 brews from Stillwell and 8 or so other local beers. Theydo 5 oz servings, so in reality it is flexible flights. |
84 /100 1932 BRUNSWICK STREET Nice place with good view to the brewery. They had 12 taps with their own brews and about 15 or so more in the fridge, so about 25-30 of their beers available here. They did flights of 4 and staff was friendly and allowed me to get all 12 beers for the price of 8 with two of the flights being half full. Beers were good quality and reasonably priced. |
66 /100 1615 GRAFTON ST Very popular place for food and beer. I was there a Monday night and I had to wait for a table to become ready. Beers are average but it is nice to get some Prince Edwards Island ticks. Food was good and they had cans to sell as well as flights of four that you could mix yourself. |
80 /100 1149 MARGINAL ROAD Great place near the station. They did a flight of all 13 beers on tap called “barrel end” and it was served on the end of a barrel. Quite cheap at only 27 CAD. They had many more cans in their fridge as well. I assume that if I would visit a year after, there would be 10+ new beers on the flight since it included a lot of seasonals. |
78 /100 2015 GOTTINGEN ST Visited on a Monday night. They had 12 taps of their own beers and a fridge with more cans. Waiter allowed me samples of all for just the price of one fight of four. Awesome service! |
78 /100 1149 MARGINAL ROAD About 10 taps plus available bottles. Didn’t try food. Beers really nice for lower alcohol brews! |
82 /100 Stillwell Beer Bar (Bar) 1672 BARRINGTON STREET Best of the Stillwell bars. If you’re short on time, prioritize this one. 12 taps, good bottle list, 5 oz pours. Decent food (reminds me of The Magnet in Vancouver). |
72 /100 2015 GOTTINGEN ST 12 taps, some takeout options. Flights of 4. Nearby many other breweries and bars. Worth putting this on the list of stops for a walk around to beer tick. Old school arcade downstairs where they sometimes host pro wrestling shows. |
76 /100 1932 BRUNSWICK STREET 12 taps, flights of 4. Tons of cans and a few bottles in the fridge. Definitely worth a stop. |
76 /100 2534 AGRICOLA ST 10 draught taps, 2 side pull taps, 6 cask-conditioned taps, and an okay selection of bottles/cans.
Good atmosphere, great music on Tuesday nights. Unfortunately, no small pours or flights. You have to goto the bar to get a drink and bring it back to your seat and it can get busy so you may have to wait for a beer if the bar seats are taken.
Near a number of other breweries so worth popping in to see what they have on and grabbing a pint of something. |
82 /100 1518 DRESDEN ROW Small place that looks like an old house, a stone's throw from the Citadel and other touristy locations. Small serving counter, two small rooms of restaurant tables and a background with umbrella picnic tables. Five regular ciders and five seasonals on offer, plus sparkling wines made by them, plus cocktails. Flights of four on offer. Ciders were mostly on the dry side, and the handful of flavored ciders were very apple forward, which I liked a lot. All were tasty. Had a really nice chat with the owner who happily described their process of fermenting 100% apples that they press in house, no juice concentrates. Everything is made elsewhere, so this is essentially a taproom, not a production facility. Food is pizza or baked brie. Solid stop. |
78 /100 1149 MARGINAL ROAD This is the mothership. In a very touristy area, so you may have to pay for parking; I walked from my Airbnb. Took advantage of their early Sunday opening to be the first customer on a Sunday around 11 am. Brewhouse is in the center of the building and you can sit at a counter and watch the brewers at work, except on the weekend of course. Nice sidewalk tables of various kinds where you can watch the tourists and their cars come and go; sadly no view of the port. 17 house beers and two ciders on tap, flights of 5, 10 or 13 - seemed like randomly generated numbers, or whatever the flight board builder wanted to make. Beers were very safe, nothing overly flavorful, all were just OK. No food. Plenty of kids and dogs. |
86 /100 1932 BRUNSWICK STREET This place has a coolship! I didn't know that until the brewer at Tusket Falls told me. Sleek modern taproom, beautiful bar and a few restaurant tables plus an intimate connection with the brewery. Covid sidewalk deck that looks (hopefully) permanent. Beers were very tasty and creative, probably the best I've had on or near the coast. Flights of four are possible. Food is limited to mediocre pretzels. A top brewery for sure |
74 /100 2220 GOTTINGEN ST On a bust street, sidewalk tables in partial shade. Small bar as well, and that's where I chose to site since the brewer was serving and I was the only person in the taproom. A dozen taps, two were empty. Beers were mostly kettle sours and IPAs plus a pils, all tasty enough. Brewer had good advice on what to try and what to skip around town.
Good stop. |
78 /100 2736, ROBIE STREET Stopped in for brunch on a Saturday morning. I love places where you can drink tasty beer at 10 AM. This place has a dark interior with a long bar and some huge leather clad couchseat-like barstools. Outside was a serving garage (both food and beer ordering) with scattered tables, mostly in shade. Servers were mostly interesting and attentive. Beers were creative, light in body, easy drinking. Solid stop. |
72 /100 6128 QUINPOOL RD On the main drag, storefront type place but with a long bar. Coolers up front for beer to go, plus swag. At least a dozen beers on tap, all pretty safe and light bodied, but no flaws. Flights of four. Staff knew the beers well. No food. Fermenters present, all empty when I visited, no visible brewhouse. OK stop if you're nearby. |
62 /100 NSLC - Halifax / Quinpool Rd (Beer Store) 6169 QUINPOOL ROAD This is the nearest beer store to my Airbnb. Sadly the beers are 90% AB INBev. What few craft beers they have on on a single shelf to the left as you enter the cooler room. Nova Scotia only, plus Gahan House (they must have a brewery in every province). Reasonable prices. |
70 /100 1615 GRAFTON ST Graham House has actually relocated to Grafton Street, it is now located inside the Nova Centre. It is quite spacious, good food and a nice selection of their own products. I have been there a few times, the only complaint is that the air conditioning is too cold. I have not tried the patio as there was major construction going on just outside
|
82 /100 Bishop’s Cellar (Beer Store) 1477 LOWER WATER STREET A friendly wine shop that also stocks 30+ beers from NS, NB, PEI, ONT & QC. As well as a few US, Belgium / Holland etc.
Great location on waterfront & weekend opening hours, Fri & Sat till midnight. |
54 /100 1149 MARGINAL ROAD A good place to spend an hour or so with reasonable beers. A selection of 10+ taps with 650ml bottles to take home. |
22 /100 1496 LOWER WATER STREET A Labatt owned establishment which is a fairly un busy tourist trap on a Saturday July Afternoon. Patio was a reasonable place to try a uninspiring Alexander Keith's IPA. Brewery tours are now $26 with plenty of Gullibles takers. |
92 /100 Stillwell Beer Bar (Bar) 1672 BARRINGTON STREET A busy bar on a Friday afternoon with a great range of locally brewed beers on 12 taps plus there own made bottles to drink in or take away. Service was good. |
64 /100 The Wooden Monkey (Restaurant) 1707 GRAFTON ST From a beer point of view rather disappointing. It's got crafts, but more the can crushers of lagers, ales, stouts none of which pulled in a RB score over mid 60. The food is ok. Striving for something interest, but doesn't quite get there. Better than the East Sides up the hill, but rather worst than the Stubborn Goat a couple of blocks over. Go there. |
78 /100 Stubborn Goat Gastropub (Bar) 1579 GRAFTON STREET Located thanks to RB. A solid pub with 16 local crafts and a few psudeo-craft macros (Toronto repped by Millstreet, le sigh) and a decent lunch menu. Worth the walk up the hill. |
56 /100 1149 MARGINAL ROAD Garrison brews some decent beers and the brewery is well situated on the waterfront near Pier 21. Until July 1st 2018 they can only serve flights. |
