84 /100 20 PALMER STREET
“Tiny Mountain’s venue is located in the Palmer Street precinct, a short walk from the Townsville CBD and there is plenty of on and off street parking nearby. It has big welcoming signage across the front and offers that relaxed tropical feel as you come in through the outdoor seating area. Inside there is that boxy industrial look however this is over-come by the light wall colours, décor which plays on the “short of a mountain” theme, and creative lighting. All-in-all it offers a relaxed atmosphere along with friendly and helpful staff. Seating is a comfortable 300+ with indoor and outdoor trestle table and stools and picnic-style tables with plank seating. In warmer weather industrial fans disperse water mist to cool the air. There are 8 taps pouring their own beers, the beers being brewed in the vessels located just behind the bar. The range is varied enough to suit all beer drinker likes however they also serve a cider (on tap), spirits and wines. All beers are competitively priced and while tasting paddles are not advertised they are available. There is a food van inside and the beer tasting notes offer food and beer pairing suggestions. The venue offers a relaxed atmosphere in which to taste locally brewed product. A must visit when in Townsville. “

“Located in a funky lane way off the main street, this is the only place in town to try a few different craft beers. They have eight rotating taps which, when I visited, had one local (you could walk just down the street and get the same beer where it was brewed) and the others from interstate. Also available are craft beers in bottles, cider on tap plus wines and spirits. The beers are craft beer prices and they also do tasting paddles of four at a reasonable price. The food menu consists of tapas, share platters and meals. The staff do their job well and are friendly enough. They have a self-pour area of eight beers (which I assume are the same as are available at the bar) where you purchase by however much you pour in your glass. Unfortunately the self-pour option was not available the one night I visited as it was after 8 pm on a quiet week night (and from what I can gather turning off the self-pour at 8pmish happens pretty regularly).“

“This is Townsville’s only craft brewery and is located in Flinders Street in the centre of town. The brewpub is popular and makes its own beers on-site. It has a core range of eight and they also do seasonal/special brews. Their tap beers are at craft beer prices, as are the tasters of eight. A few of the beer range are available in bottles however I found these to be very expensive even for a craft brewery (and the beers available are their basic range - Bitter, etc - so nothing very special). The bar staff were friendly and talkative and not intrusive. There are two parts to the place, the pub and a restaurant – the pub is as it says while the restaurant is a bit fancier in décor, staff and table service. The pub part has a pub-like atmosphere with TV screens (showing sport) and pool tables. The food is pub-style (bar snacks, burgers, share plates, main meals) and the dishes I tried were quite tasty and value for money. Most week-nights street parking is available within easy walking distance. The venue has improved markedly over the past few years, as has the taste and quality of their beers.“

“Popular roomy microbrewery-tap in Townsville CBD with an uninspired core range of beers (but at least freshly made) plus some occasionally interesting limited releases. Tasting flights available. Decent food - bar menu and a la carte in adjacent restaurant. Lots of TV screens for the sports. Outside terrace area with smoking section. It’s been around for over 15 years so fair play to them.“

76 /100 CITY LANE, 373 FLINDERS ST
“The only bone fide craft beer bar in North Queensland as far as I am aware. It’s located down the end of a Melbourne-style laneway off Flinders Street with an underground Woolworths next door. Rotating tap list is not exactly on the cutting edge of the Australian craft beer scene but it is still light years ahead of everywhere else in the area (with perhaps the exception of the Townsville Brewery tap, located nearby). Beer flights available. There is also about 20 beers sold by the can or bottle. Serves tapas which we didn’t try when we visited on a (quiet) Monday early evening. Plenty of outside seating. No screens. Recommended when in Townsville.“

“Visited on 24th March 2016. Old Post Office converted into a brewpub. It’s a nice old building, high ceilings. Lots of room although not that many seats. Busy on a Wednesday lunchtime. Tasting flight of 7 core beers plus a seasonal available. Also a small range of bottles which features Proper Job and Lia Fail from the UK. Not too expensive. Beers were OK. Staff friendly enough. Only venue listed in town. So check it out if passing!“
