I’m travelling from Norway to Netherland to spend a week in a place called Slagharen on the east side of the country close to the border between Drenthe and Overijssel. I don’t have a lot of time to drive around looking for the kind of beer i love, so hopefully someone in here can give me some pointers where to go.
I’ve been checking out the map on Ratebeer to locate stores, but they do not give a good impression of what kind of beer they are offering or specialising in. I’ve heard rumors that I will find a lot of local double/triple/quadruples all around the country, but the style is just not my kind of beer.
I love big boozy imperial stouts preferably from USA, but I know my way around Emelisse and DeMolen. Unfortunately I don’t know a lot more Dutch breweries that make good stouts.
Can I expect to find imperial stouts in normal super markeds, or do I have to go to special stores?
Can you give me names of Dutch breweries to search for when I’m there?
Is there any stores within normal driving range (45minutes) from Slagharen that you know is better at Imp stouts or imported american breweries?
Don’t know if I can get all the way to Amsterdam to visit Bierkoning.

Good stores I know of (within 45 mins): - Pakhuis Twente in Albergen ( https://www.ratebeer.com/p/pakhuis-twente/37592/ ) [tue-sat] - Stanislaus Brewskovitch in Zwolle ( https://www.ratebeer.com/p/stanislaus-brewskovitch-zwolle/66055/ ) [wed-sat?] Good stores (at about an hours travel) - Berendsen in Enschede ( https://www.ratebeer.com/p/slijterij-hennie-berendsen/12478/ ) [mon-sat] - Stanislaus Brewskovitch in Enschede ( https://www.ratebeer.com/p/stanislaus-brewskovitch-enschede/52472/ ) [wed-sat] I would definitely visit Pakhuis Twente, they have a great selection of beers. I have never been to Stanislaus in Zwolle, but I think it a smaller version of the Enschede store (not sure). The Enschede store had KBS some weeks ago (not sure if it’s still there). All these stores have a good selection of anglo-american styles. I don’t think you’ll find imperial stouts in the supermarket. In that area anyway. As for Dutch breweries: definitely Kees, Jopen and Uiltje. Berghoeve has excellent BA imperial stouts (and other beers!) and will be available in the stores above. You could even drive past the brewery to pick some up (on appointment only). Moersleutel has to be mentioned, Oedipus Kinderyoga is a great RIS and for sale at some of those stores, There are more.. Also don’t forget the Belgian Stuise and Dochter van de Korenaar breweries.

Congratulations on picking the area of the country where the least beer is brewed. I live in this beer void, so I can be frank about it. ;) You will have to seek out special stores in order to acquire Imperial Stouts, and even then don’t expect to come back with a trunk filled with Impies. There are beer stores in Hoogeveen and Meppel. Stanislaus Brewskovitch in Zwolle is your best bet, it’s about a 30-40 minutes drive from Slagharen. There’s a brewery in Gramsbergen called Mommeriete, which makes for a very nice visit. Their beers tend to fall in the more traditional styles, but they do make an Imperial Stout.

Thanks a lot for the update. I will take a couple of mini tours around the area, and I will have to check out if that Pony park is suitable for dropping the wife and the kids of and then take half a day driving and shopping for beers. Sad for me that I wont get to experience to ride and grab them by the pony, but sometimes a man have to choose his battles.
