As part of our small batch lager program this new iteration of our Vienna Lager, Volksgarten, features an enhanced decoction process. Pleasant notes of honey and biscuit in the aroma, along with gently toasted almond character and a subtle malt sweetness on the tongue. Czech Saaz adds a spicy herbal component.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2023 16 ounce can - $4.25 at Woodstock Beer Market in Woodstock, Georgia. 120623. Appearance: Pours a clear, dark golden body with a medium-small, white head. Smell: Lightly toasted malt aroma housing a subtle cooked sugar sweetish quality. Very scant dry herbal hop hint. Taste: Lightly toasty malts anchored by a sustained, trenchant graininess. Minimal, brief sweetness akin to a flash of torched turbinado. A little dry herbal hop hint like a sip of black tea. Its minimal sweetness fades for a drying, grainy finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Overall: I could drink this all damn day long.

junkyarddawg (33) - Georgia, USA - JUL 9, 2023
UPDATED: JUL 9, 2023 Appearance: Slightly cloudy, light amber. Frothy white head with great retention. Aroma: Malt forward. Bready and slight toast. Low floral hops. Flavor: Malt forward. Rich bready and slightly toasted malt. Spicy hops. Drying. Restrained bitterness. Soft and drying at the finish with mild, balancing bitterness into the finish. Mouth feel: Medium to Medium light body. Moderate carbonation. Overall: A brewery that knows how to make a classic, historical Vienna Lager. It's soft and elegant. Malt forward but dry with an appropriate, balancing bitterness. Bready and leans toasty in flavor. Zero caramel flavors. Spicy Saaz hops. Clean fermentation profile. Avoids the sweetness of most American versions. I've tried many VL, looking for a classic example. Most miss the mark. This one is dead on. Well crafted. Highly recommend if you like amber lagers or, especially, if you are looking for an authentic reproduction of the style.

Ernest (9435) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUN 15, 2023
UPDATED: JUN 15, 2023 Can (Mar 23, 2023 canning). Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain/bread, cookie), lightly hoppy (herbs). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. A bit underwhelming overall, but plenty solid...I do like the malt character, but there's not much else going on. Like other Schilling lagers I've tried, it's just too simplistic and restrained to be a real winner...there seems to be no magic or soul in their beers, just by-the-numbers workmanship. Which is not a bad thing, nor should that be misconstrued as a desire for 'innovation' in these styles, just more personality and attention to detail.

AirForceHops (15110) - Epping, New Hampshire, USA - MAY 21, 2023
UPDATED: MAY 21, 2023 16 oz. can. Aroma has soft cracker with a note of toffee. Everything in the flavor is subtle. Toffee, bread-like malt, very soft herb in the finish. What’s great is the crisp, dry texture that’s extremely refreshing. Nice!
