COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2023 11.5oz bottle from Luekens Wine and Spirits, Seminole. Very dark, almost black, also no head. Hazelnut aroma, a little bit of chocolate malt, vanilla. Sweet taste, more chocolate and some caramel, with a chalky bitterness rounding out the finish. Body’s quite watery, surprisingly. Low carbonation. Not bad by any means but I don’t get the exceptionally high rates.

Demens (946) - Budapest, HUNGARY - AUG 27, 2021
UPDATED: AUG 27, 2021 0,341 bottle. Thick black colour with medium lasting foamy, light brown head. Aroma: Coffee bean, fresh espresso, dark chocolate, coco powder, but also vanilla and a hint of dried plum. Taste: Has a brutal malty start with some rye-like sourness but very balanced. Than the bitter mouthfeel kicks in. Has some flourish tone with nuts, and also with the espresso/dark chocolate kind of bitterness. Very well balanced. Has a slightly oily texture. Medium/full body with soft carbonation. Long lasting earthy and dry/bitter finish with some soft almond-like sidetones. Masterpiece!

GoufCustom (3017) - HONG KONG - MAR 14, 2021
UPDATED: MAR 14, 2021 341ml bottle with twisted cap bought at Cave Beer Point in Mei Foo. Looks: Opaque deep Cola blackish brown colour with a ring of dirt-like yeast sediments; One-quarter finger head and soapy beige foam which fades in 15 seconds; Fair sticky lacing and zero carbonation. Aroma: Very fragrant roasted dark malt, with strong cocoa, strong vanilla, Bourbon, rich cream, strong caramel, strong sticky toffee, roasted coffee beans, alcohol, liquorices, sugar, biscuits, earth, yeast, thin lemon and faint grass. Wow! Taste: Mid to light sweet dark malt, with strong roastyness, strong burnt toast, strong dark chocolate, vanilla, strong black coffee, caramel, toffee, traces of peat, light cream, Cola, floral, light sugar, strong earth, spices, yeast, lime, strong bitter hops and strong grass. Body: Mid to full body. Very slick and creamy palate. Mouth Feel: Strong dark maltyness in a quite thick and creamy background. Surprisingly low sweet given the strong vanilla and cocoa and aroma. Very burnt toasty and loads of roasted black coffee and dark chocolate, backed with a trace of peat smokiness (amazing!). Notably floral and earthy hops, yeasty limey with strong grass to round. Incredible! Hoppiness: Earth, thin lemon and faint grass in nose. Floral, strong earth, spices, lime and strong grass in taste; Bitterness - malt and hops - is strong yet subtle for a lasting, close to high-level bitter roasted dark malty finish. After Taste: Fairly dry. Toasty roasted coffee and strong bitter to mouth. Comments: This one is surprising in many ways: a rich cocoa and vanilla aroma with Bourbon usually means strong sweetness, but its taste is anything but, with lively roasted coffee and burnt toast backed with very earthy limey hop bitterness, I am simply amazed at every sip. A classic!
