Production breweries that lack taprooms:

• Lazy Loon Brewing Company, Victoria: Lazy Loon Lanes is open now in Norwood Young America. It’s a bowling alley with full bar and off-sale license. Lazy Loon Brewing Company calls Lazy Loon Lanes its "Tap Room" or "Brewing Alley," but no beer is brewed on site. Lazy Loon Brewing Company is looking to relocate its brewery, possibly on-site at Lazy Loon Lanes.
• Vine Park Brewing Company, St. Paul: This business operates on a unique model in which patrons brew their own beer on site using Vine Park recipes.
• 56 Brewing Company, Minneapolis: In the process of moving to a new location (also in Nordeast Minneapolis) that will have a taproom. Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative eventually will open in 56 Brewing’s current space, and Broken Clock does plan to have a taproom.
• Cosmos Brewing, Hugo: No plans for a taproom

Notes on open breweries:

• Wisconsin breweries don’t adhere to Minnesota’s brewpub/taproom distinction. I have classified them as I think most appropriate.
• Barley John’s is the name of a brewpub in New Brighton, Minnesota (Barley John’s Brew Pub) and a production brewery with taproom in New Richmond, Wisconsin (Barley John’s Brewing Company). They have separate ownership but closely associated brands, and they do share some recipes. Because the two locations have separate ownership, I think their beers should have distinct entries here on RateBeer based on their location of origination (e.g., Barley John’s (New Brighton) Old 8 Porter and Barley John’s (New Richmond) Old 8 Porter), but apparently the admins disagree.
• Bent Brewstillery in Roseville is a brewery and distillery. It has only a taproom, not a cocktail room, as combined taproom / cocktail rooms are not allowed by Minnesota law, but owner Bartley Blume has started a “Free the Cocktails!” campaign to change that law.
• Burning Brothers in St. Paul brews only gluten-free beers.
• Dave’s BrewFarm in Wilson, Wisconsin long has been for sale.
• Fulton’s original location and taproom is in the North Loop section of Minneapolis, but the bulk of its beer is brewed at a taproom-free facility in Nordeast Minneapolis (Minnesota law allows only one taproom per brewing company).
• Granite City is a “brewpub” chain headquartered in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. The original location was (and remains) in St. Cloud. All wort used at all locations throughout the country is brewed in Ellsworth, Iowa and trucked to the individual restaurants, where the fermentation takes place. The St. Louis Park “brewpub” is in a separate location from the company headquarters.
• Lucette Brewing Company in Menomonie, Wisconsin calls its taproom/brewpub “Lucette WoodFire Eatery” and serves pizza (among other foods).
• North Loop BrewCo in Minneapolis has branded its taproom, and some of the beers served there, as “Inbound,” but its bottled and distributed beers are marketed as North Loop. North Loop brews North Loop, Inbound, and American Sky-branded beers out of its Minneapolis brewery. Many of you will remember that North Loop’s history actually is quite a bit more complicated still.
• Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery in Minneapolis has two open satellite locations, Town Hall Tap and Town Hall Lanes, both in south Minneapolis. It is working on a third satellite location, Town Hall Station in Edina. I believe the long-planned Nordeast Minneapolis location is on hold. All of the brewing is done at the original Seven Corners Minneapolis location.
• Minnesota Harvest Orchard in Jordan is open seasonally and brews (or brewed) graff, cider, cyser, and mead as well as wine. This brewing is (or used to be) done by Tim Roets, now of Roets Jordan Brewery Co. I have never been to Minnesota Harvest Orchard, and I don’t know if it still produces alcoholic beverages. I assume it operates (or operated) on a winery license.
• moto-i in Minneapolis brews only sake, a.k.a., rice beer.
• Nutmeg Brewhouse in Burnsville is planning a satellite location in Arden Hills. All of the brewing will continue to be done at the original location in Burnsville.
• Real Deal Brewing Company in Menomonie, Wisconsin is part of a restaurant called The Raw Deal.
• Rock Bottom Minneapolis is a location in the national restaurant chain. All Rock Bottom beer served at the Minneapolis location is brewed on site.
• Schram Vineyards in an unincorporated area adjacent to Waconia brews both beer and wine (as well as some related beverages) and sells both beer and wine in its “taproom.” It technically operates on a winery license.
• Sociable Cider Werks in Minneapolis, despite its name, brews only beer and graff (beer/cider hybrids). True cider brewing requires a winery license in Minnesota.
• Rumor has it that South Fork Brewing Company in Delano recently was sold, and its future as a brewery is unknown.
• Steel Toe in St. Louis Park also houses a distillery with overlapping ownership called Millers & Saints. Only beer (no liquor) is served in Steel Toe’s taproom.
• Surly has its Beer Hall, Brewer’s Table, Scheid Hall, and The Boardroom (collectively, its taproom) at its Minneapolis location. The Minneapolis location brews most of the beer by volume, but the original Brooklyn Center location brews most of the beer by SKU. Surly closed the original Brooklyn Center taproom when it opened the Minneapolis taproom, as required by state law.

[Notes on open breweries, continued from above]

• The Freehouse in Minneapolis is part of the Blue Plate restaurant group. The group also encompasses Mercury Dining Room and Rail, The Lowry, Bottle Rocket (not yet opened), 3 Squares Restaurant, Longfellow Grill, Edina Grill, Groveland Tap, and Highland Grill, all of which are in the Twin Cities area. While most of the locations precede The Freehouse, they can be considered satellite locations, and I believe all of the locations serve Freehouse beers on tap. All of the beer is brewed on site at The Freehouse in the North Loop section of Minneapolis.
• Urban Growler in St. Paul, like Surly, is one of the few taprooms in town with a full kitchen.
• Wayzata Brew Works in Edina also has a distillery, although I’m not sure if the distillery is yet operating. Only beer (no liquor) is available in the taproom.

Taprooms-in-planning (and some brewpubs-in-planning if noted): I’ve included some of the more prominent, concrete, and likely-actually-to-open (in my mind) BIPs and those that have been in the news recently. I’ve left off a bunch that seem to be stalled or otherwise leave me pessimistic that they’ll open in the next couple of years. If you have any questions about any of these or any BIPs that are missing, let me know, and I’ll see what I can find.

• 12welve Eyes Brewing, (downtown) St. Paul
• 56 Brewing Company, (Nordeast) Minneapolis - Currently brewing in old NorthGate space with no taproom. Will be opening in a larger space with a taproom.
• Alloy Brewing Company, Coon Rapids
• Back Channel Brewing Collective, Spring Park
• Barrel Theory Beer Company, (Lowertown) St. Paul
• BlackStack Brewing Company, St. Paul - Large plan that has experienced significant delays
• Boathouse Brothers Brewing, Prior Lake
• Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative, (Nordeast) Minneapolis - Will be opening in the current 56 space. Unlike 56 in its current location, Broken Clock does plan to have a taproom.
• Cedar Island Brewing, Albertville
• Chapel Brewery, Dundas - F.k.a., "Meetinghall" and "Meetinghouse"
• Clutch, (West 7th) St. Paul
• Common Man Brewing, Ellsworth WI (brewpub) - Operating now as a restaurant and bar; brewery component seems to be indefinitely delayed
• Finnegans, (downtown) Minneapolis - Currently a client brewer at Summit

• Hamel Brewing Company, Hamel/Medina
• Headflyer Brewing, (Nordeast) Minneapolis
• Imminent Brewing, Northfield
• Invictus Brewing Company, Blaine
• Looney Bin, (downtown) St. Paul

• Pryes Brewing, (North) Minneapolis - Currently a client brewer at North Loop
• Roma Restaurant, Willernie (brewpub) - Currently operating as a restaurant and bar. Planning to add a brewery component.

BIPs outside of the Twin Cities area (most will have taprooms; I’m not sure if any will be brewpubs): I don’t follow these as closely as the ones in the Twin Cities area, so some of these may be out-of-date (i.e., plans may be stalled or canceled), and I may be missing some.

• Bluenose Gopher, Granite Falls
• Boundary Waters, Winton
• Cuyuna, Crosby
• Grainy Days, Duluth
• Half Pint, Waseca
• Highway 61, Rollingstone
• Hoppy Girl, Wabasha
• Hoops, Duluth

• Karst, Fountain
• Local Artisan, Brainerd lakes area - Threatened by recent loss of its planned location
• Oakhold Farmhouse, Midway Township - Also listed in Twin Cities area taprooms-in-planning list due to planned satellite taproom in Minneapolis
• Pantown, St. Cloud
• Portage, Walker
• Revelation Ale Works, Hallock
• Starry Eyed, Little Falls
• St. Louis River, Cloquet
• Talking Waters, Montevideo
• The Lincoln Brewery, Eyota

Clutch Brewing, a BIP for St. Paul, will be in the keg house of the old Schmidt brewery on West 7th Street. http://www.twincities.com/2017/01/12/beer-organic-ice-cream-on-tap-for-schmidt-brewery-site/

Outside of the metro area, Cuyuna Brewing Company in Crosby is set to open on January 27. The Growler has more information: http://growlermag.com/now-open-or-damn-close-cuyuna-brewing-company/

Black Stack Brewing (I’ve always seen it as "BlackStack," without the space, including on the company’s Facebook page) plans to open in February in St. Paul next to the heavily hyped and newly opened Can Can Wonderland art museum / performance space / miniature golf course / bar. Black Stack is a very large plan by intended volume and has been plagued by regulatory delays. 2017 is shaping up to be a big year for brewery openings in St. Paul. Hat tip to Chaz. http://m.startribune.com/for-st-paul-s-newest-beermaker-black-stack-brewing-will-be-a-family-affair/410972935/

Torg Brewing Company will be in Spring Lake Park in the north metro area "with an eye on a late 2017 or early 2018 opening." (I’ll go ahead and say that means it won’t be opening in 2017). I had it listed as being in Andover or Pine City, and I had failed to include it on my taprooms-in-planning update yesterday specifically because I didn’t know where it would be located. http://tcbmag.com/News/Recent-News/2017/January/Bringing-Approachable-Beer-To-The-North-Metro

BeerAdvocate Magazine recently listed Modist in Minneapolis as one of the "34 of the Best New Breweries in the US." I can’t say I agree; I’d put Wild Mind as the clear best of class of 2016 in this state (and Bobtown in Roberts, Wisconsin as best of class in the metro area). Frankly, I’d probably label Modist as "most disappointing opening of 2016," with its cold, uninviting taproom and beers that are high on experimentation in ingredients and surprisingly low on flavor. That said, I do think Modist slowly is starting to approach its potential and is capable of brewing a darn good beer. Unsolicited advice: Sell flights or small pours at the taproom. You’re nowhere close to as busy as Surly or Dangerous Man; you have no excuse. https://www.beeradvocate.com/mag/14961/class-of-2016-34-of-the-best-new-breweries-in-the-us/

Outside of the Twin Cities area, Revelation Ale Works in Hallock, "the only local brewery between Grand Forks and Winnipeg," "expect(s) to open in the next couple of weeks." http://www.wdaz.com/news/minnesota/4200858-first-brewery-between-grand-forks-and-winnipeg-opening-soon

Talking Waters in Montevideo has been open for about six months now so you can take that off the BIP list. Beer is good by the way. My father in law actually golfs with one of the owners (oh good for you)
